Ryan Kelly for Utah State House of Representatives

It is the intention of the Libertarian Party to return this country to its foundations of freedom and liberty.  To help achieve those goals, I have signed the following pledge.

"I promise that if elected I will vote in favor of all matters that lead to a reduction in taxes and government, and expansion of personal freedoms and against all matters causing higher taxes, bigger government, and restrictions on personal freedoms.  If I ever act contrary to this pledge, I will publicly apologize and offer to resign."

I want to work from inside the government to make sure it knows its limits.  I don't want us to tell you how to live; that is for you to decide.  People in government shouldn't be elected for any reason other than to be there when someone's rights are being threatened, so that laws can be adjusted to preserve liberty and freedom.  It's time that Utah had at least one person working for those goals, and I intend to be that person.

Things I will do as your Representative:

  •  Listen to the people I represent

  • Communicate your ideas to the Legislature

  • Improve communication between myself and my voters

  • Encourage public participation in developing legislation and determining how I will vote

  • Ensure that you get all the information to help me decide what action we take as a district

  • Work towards getting the rest of Utah, and eventually our entire nation involved with their government again

  • Convince the other members of the Legislature that we have a responsibility to our voters to treat them with respect and listen to their concerns

Remember, the government is chosen by the people, of the people, to work for the people.

Things I will NOT do as Representative:

  • Allow lobbyists and special interest groups to influence my actions

  • Accept gifts or favors in return for votes

  • Show favoritism towards one group of voters over another

  • Allow my personal feelings about issues to affect my decisions

  • Tell my consituents that I don't have to listen to them

  • Waste your time, and mine, by engaging in activities that don't involve working for you and helping your ideas for our nation become reality

Questions:

  • 1 - Are you registered to vote, and if so, do you participate regularly in the general elections?  Why/why not?
  • 2 - When choosing a candidate to vote for, do you investigate that person, determining if they are honest, decent people who will truly represent you and the place you live in, or do you make your decision based solely on which political party that person is a member of?
  • 3 – Do you take the time to make yourself aware of what is happening in your country, and what impact these things will have on your life?
  • 4 – Do you ever worry that the elected officials and their party leaders have connections to lobbies and large corporations who use their money and power to influence the way in which your representatives vote?
  • 5 - Do you think you are responsible for the future of America?
  • 6 - Are you familiar with our Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution?
  • 7 - Do you think that the political parties, and their leaders, are honestly interested in you and the things you need for a quality life?
  • 8 - Do you think that the system functions in such a way that if you were not pleased with the representation that you are receiving, you could do something to change it?
  • 9 - Do you think it is too late to make changes in Congress by removing the current members from office, and electing new people who have no connections to third-party interests?
  • 10 – Would you ask a random person you meet today to start making the decisions for you and your family without any knowledge of what they are going to do, and without ever checking on what they are doing with your life?  Why do you accept this from your government?
